Setting the scene, going over the syllabus, and planning what's to come in the weeks ahead.
week 1 was our introductory week. we did an exercise inspired by a tweet I saw a few years ago and saved in a folder I called 'if I ever teach a class.' that folder, and all the other bits & bobs I'd been saving were love letters to future students & a future class. I shared with everyone that this class is a bit of an experiment but full of passion. I hoped we could explore creativity together and I spoke a little about pedagogy (the ' art ' of teaching).
I also shared some of my pedagogical inspirations, and in particular bell hooks' notion that to be excited in the classroom is to transgress (teaching to transgress). you can read more about pedagogy, see the class exercise & read my letter in the syllabus zine.
below are the instructions for an optional mini-workshop (our first practical/creative learning workshop this semester): letter writing.
